ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems

The world's most widely adopted quality management standard — helping organisations build consistency, reduce risk, and earn lasting customer trust.

Overview

The International Standard for Quality Management

ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for a quality management system (QMS). To be certified to the standard, an organisation must comply to the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard. Certification of this standard shows an organisation's ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements and demonstrates their commitment to continuous improvement.

The Value

Why Implement ISO 9001:2015

Customers today expect consistency. Organisations that can reliably meet expectations — order after order, project after project — build the kind of trust that keeps clients coming back and attracts new business. ISO 9001:2015 gives an organisation a structured way to manage its processes with that consistency in mind, while building in a mechanism for ongoing improvement rather than a one-time fix. For many organisations, holding this certification isn't just a quality signal — it's increasingly a baseline expectation from customers and partners before they'll even do business together.

Applicability

Who Is This Standard For

The ISO 9001:2015 standard is useful for an organisation which:

Needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, and

Aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

System Structure

Main Components

The ISO 9001:2015 specifies requirements for a quality management system for an organisation which incorporates a cycle of Plan-Do-Check-Act and Continual Improvement, elements which form the essence of having a quality management system in place. The management system encompasses operational activities such as i) Control of documents and records, ii) Control of non-conforming products, iii) Corrective and preventive actions (continual improvement) and iv) Internal audits. The certification is to be renewed every 3 years.

Evolution

About the 2015 Revision

The 2015 version of ISO 9001 marked a significant shift from earlier editions. It restructured the standard into 10 clauses, removed the earlier edition's list of mandatory documented procedures in favour of letting organisations determine what documentation genuinely adds value, introduced risk-based thinking as a core requirement, and placed greater emphasis on the direct involvement and accountability of top management in the quality system — rather than treating it as a delegated, siloed function.

Universal Application

Who Should Be Certified

The requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 are generic and are intended to be applicable to any organization, regardless of its type, size, products or services it provides.
